Title: Daily Drum Warm-Ups (365 Exercises to Develop Your Technique)
Post by: Andy Ziker on December 06, 2010, 01:40 PM
I'm excited to announce that my next book, Daily Drum Warm-Ups (also published by Hal Leonard), is now in print (I received my complimentary copies in the mail on Sat.)
This book is a great companion to Drum Aerobics, because it uses the same kind of structured format based on the calendar year.
Not only are their tons of exercises to improve your rudiments, hybrid rudiments, accenting, weak hand, fingers, reading, triple strokes, BZZzz's, and Moeller technique, but I've thrown in my own take on warming up: odd time signatures, famous stickings (borrowed from some all-time greats), and how to play these exercises using your hands (bare hands) and brushes.
The CD includes all examples and 20 foot ostinatos, so that each hand exercise can be used as a drumset coordination workout. It's also pre-packaged with a light version of the Amazing Slow Downer.
My general concept here was to write a book of one-surface warm-ups that all could easily be applied to the drumset.
I'm also hopeful that the marching/drumline world will find this a valuable resource.

Congratulations Andy! I am looking forward to check it out.
How is coming along the last book you were finishing writing? I mean the one you showed me at Indy.

Talk to you soon
Gaetano

Thanks Gaetano! I'm plugging away at the book that I showed you at Indy. I'm hoping to be finished with that one within two months....I'm also working on some transcriptions that I'm going to put up on my website. Thanks for trading books with me at PASIC. Your books are awesome, and from what I've seen on YouTube, so is your playing!

Congratulations, Andy - I'm anxious to see your new book, it looks both practical and fun!

I, too, BTW, am I fan of One Surface Learning by Roy Burns and Joey Farris, as well as Bill Bachman's approach to the rudiments in his Modern Drummer series of articles.

As someone who considers the drumset as "my instrument" but believes in a strong foundation in snare drumming, I've been inspired by the methods above and promote them to my students when applicable because they help provide effective solutions to common problems drummers often face when learning to coordinate and hear more complex ideas. I look forward to exploring your take on all this.

I was flattered to be mentioned in your Percussion Partners article as well and I appreciate the plug for Mastering the Tables of Time, thank you.

Thanks for the creative and fun ideas you bring to the table of learning. I always dig an alternative approach that's fresh and inspiring that can motivate players of all levels and your work consistently speaks to me in that fashion. I wish you great success with this and all your work!

Note: I've updated my review to reflect the fact that Hal Leonard sent me another book/CD package which resolved the defective CD issue.

Thank you so much, Bart, for taking the time to change the review to reflect the replacement book (an CD) that Hal Leonard sent you. I really appreciate it!

Companies who produce music books (such as Hal Leonard) do little to no advertising, so instead of sitting back and whining about it, I decided to make my own commercial for Daily Drum Warm-Ups.
I used only my $80 HD camera, iMovie, and my sense of humor (if there's any left).

Hope you enjoy!

Nice, Andy!

Also great for...

Waiting on hold for technical support
Expectant fathers in the waiting room
Waiting for the vocalist to decide on a tempo or key
Long bus rides while chaperoning field trips

Here is the first in a series of self-produced promo videos for Daily Drum Warm-Ups. Included are some suggestions on how to apply the one-surface exercises to the drum kit.

Thanks, Bart! Here's the 2nd video. These are gradually killing me off, so I hope that they are worthwhile!
