I went through the hate side of my love/hate relationship with drumming and sold everything off. Naturally, the love part is 1000 times stronger so that didn't last long.
Since I'm not in any bands at the moment (I play at a church) I bought a set of Rolands for home. Just about 3 weeks ago I picked up a brand new V-Session with a Pearl double-kick.
I'm not going to argue whether E drums are better worse or the same as A's, I just know that I can play them any time day or night and my family doesn't kill me.

Sticks is another matter -- I've got this one pair of ugly orange sticks that were given to me at a NAMM show back in the mid-80's. I love them! I think (not sure) that they are some sort of composite material and I would really like to find more. They are straight, well-balanced, excellent sounding -- better than nylon on cymbals, and have lasted me for about 15 years so far.

If anyone has any idea what these sticks are, who made them, where I could get more -- I'd love to know!!

if there is anything being negelcted you could always send it to a charitable person like me who likes to take neglected peices of drum equipment off your hands...so many cymbols suffer from neglect, its so sad...thats why I am willing to step in and help them!!....please? ;D ;D ;D ;)

Yeah Bartman, you aren't kidding around!  I've checked out your web-site and seen all your different setups.  <thinking out loud>  "Must be nice to have sponsorship!"   LOL!!

;D Well, just for the record, none of my gear came from any kind of a sponsorship or endorsement; I'm not good enough to get free gear.  It all came from hard work and the sweat of my brow. I did get a lot of stuff from back when I had my drumshop; wholesale prices are a beautiful thing.

Just out of curiosity, how often do you use all your different stuff Bartman? You have so much, so how much do you use it all?

It all gets used, but not all the time. When I do a percussion session 80% of my percussion gear goes with me ... which takes a very long time to load and unload. For me, it's important to have a large selection at my disposal at the recording studio. I really hate hearing something I want to add ... only to find that I didn't bring it with me.  :o

I enjoy collecting the stuff as a hobby too ... so I get double benefits ... being able to use it on the gig/session, as well as collecting it. I like having the right tool for the job ... whenever possible.

ahhh.....200th post and I still can't spell or string ledgeable sentances together.....does anyone think i'll get any better ?.....nope, I did'nt think so..

Bart, I was wondering why you feel that to get sponsorship/endorcements you have to "be good"..

Certainly in Britain, being "Good" is rarely part of the deal when it comes to freebees ect. Its all about exposure and having that "marketable thing" thats in "vogue" at that precise time(doesnt mean musicianship.....rarely in fact).

Plenty of great musicians I know have never been near smelling distance of any company deals.......

How many drummers that have been mentioned in the "Overated Drummers" thread have sponsorship....I bet a lot..

Ringo for one I believe and Ive stated my views on him, plenty of times..

Bart, I was wondering why you feel that to get sponsorship/endorcements you have to "be good".

I didn't say that. I said I wasn't good enough to get free gear ... I didn't say I wasn't good enough to get an endorsement. Those are two different things ... and I agree with you that being good often has little to do with it. Having good exposure and being in the public eye is usually what matters ... but you must obtain some level of proficiency in order to play in front of the masses.

I've got free stuff before ... but I was just trying to make a point that 99.99999% of my gear did not come from endorsements or sponsorships.

Dude, read!  He IS sponsored!  He just doesn't get all of the free gear!  And it wasn't a drumkey, it was a sticker!!  LOL!!
Title: Re:What is your drumset set-up? What is the name of the drums that you use?
Post by: Bart Elliott on May 14, 2002, 06:57 AM
LOL ... you guys are too much.  :P

Free drumheads, sticks, mallets, etc., doesn't qualify as gear. I didn't get any free drums or instruments. Sabian gave me some free cymbals when I first got connected with them back in the early 90's. The cymbals are the 0.00001% of the gear I got for free.

So ... back to the topic at hand.
Title: Re:What is your drumset set-up? What is the name of the drums that you use?
Post by: clearseawater on May 14, 2002, 03:24 PM
Without sounding like im splitting hairs here Bart ;) I natually assumed you ment that because when BanimalG said "it must be nice to have sponsorship" you replied "im not good enough to get free gear". If one was to make that association it would only be natural to do so....

You also replied on your last post :
"but you must obtain some level of proficiency in order to play in front of the masses."

I agree to a point but thats not a reliable water mark in my humble opinion as plenty of "hack" drummers play infront of the masses and have freebes/endorces to boot..and many of them play at levels well under most of us here on this forum..

Right back to the point, I forgot to mention I have a Sonor Peddle.....I think its a late 70's one. Its real heavy as Sonor stuff tends to be and has large cam/flywheel assembly(double nylon composite strap drive) . Trouble is, no matter how much I try, I can't for the life of me track down the peddles name as it feels as though it may need a service..

Does any Sonor guys here know how best to do this ?
Ive searched on the classic Sonor sites to no avail..

rhumbley.....I bet you can advise me with that drummy hardware mind of your :)

I don't have any pictures to put up, but I play two sets. One is small. I use a 1920's Leedy bass drum with a 20'S Slingerland snare (15"), Zildjian hi-hats (K top Z bottom) and an older Zildjian ride 24".

The other set is a 1969 Ludwig 5 piece set - 22" bass 14" tom 16" tom and 18" floor tom. I use a 13" Tama snare (handhammered) 3 1/2" deep.  I use a splash (8"Zildjian) and a 16" Sabian Thin crash and an older Zildjian ride 22" or the 24". Sometimes I add in a Zildjian China Cymbal with that set up.

I also have a "junk" kit (percussion excitement to the maximum) cowbells, hand drums, washboard, spoons, shakers, rattles, bells, and whistles, pots, pans, a great old saw blade etc... it's just for fun.

I am desperately looking for a new drum-kit. I really like those Gretch's.

My friend has a really cool pearl kit made in japan.  It's all birch in a red trans stain with a 6.5 metal free floater.  It is the coolest pearl kit I have played.  Super punchy with that clear pearl "bark" voice to them.

Here's my humble kit

1979 Yamaha 9000 series (Made in Taiwan) Birch & Camelia.
BD 14x24
TT  10x13
TT  11x14
FT  16x18
All in ORIGINAL Vintage Finish 8)

Snare Drums:
Yamaha 5.5x14 Steel
Ludwig Coliseum 8x14 Birch w/chrome wrap

Yamaha 900 series hardware and Gibraltor rack.
DW 5000 single chain kick pedal
Zildgian 22" medium ride (circa 1970)
Zildjian K 18" medium ride/crash
Zildjian K 16" medium crash
Ludwig (by Paiste) piece of crap and cracked 14" crash (one of my favorites for it's truly cheesy sound) ;D

Great drums, but man, do they ever take up a lot of space for a basic set.  ::) Would love to find a matching 22" BD and 12" and 16" tom for this set.
I sometimes think about converting the 18" tom to a bass drum, but it's got the deepest resonant sound I've ever heard outside a tymp. Can't bring myself to make a mediocre BD out of a great tom. :P

i love the sound and feel of 2 independant basses, and my hi hats are reversed, ex. top cymbal is on the bottom and bottom is on the top. sounds better to me.  and i just reciently suspended my floor toms and i want to get 2 more floor toms 18 20(might have to convert a bass to it.

:D Usually I don't like showing off with my gear (because there's like nothing to show off with) but hey why not:

The kits I play most are:

1. My Pearl Rhythm Traveler (at home - for practising; I also take it to small gigs)

2. A Yamaha Stage Custom kit (10"; 12"; 14" & 16" toms) in black. With a great sounding Pearl Signature Chad Smith snare (which I recently bought and really love) I use it in the band practise studio.

Cymbal set-up differs dependig of the kit I use, but mainly I put on:

Paiste 802 20" Heavy ride
Paiste 802 14" Hi-hats
Paiste 802 16" China
Paiste 802 16" Crash
Paiste 802 18" Crash
Paiste Alpha 18" Power Crash
Paiste 2002 12" Splash
Paiste Signature 10" Splash

Cheers,

Erwtje

and of course the names of my drums;
The Kick is Ringo,
John is the snare, 12" tom is....Dave, 13" tom, Buddy, and the floor tom will be....um....ok...Tom...
alright ill stop before i name the cymbals too....

I just started playing drums, and I have a used kit.  The "brand" is called Thor.  I never heard of this brand, but whatever.  If it sounds good, it sounds good.

It is an 8 piece, but I only have 5 set up, because there is no point in setting up 8 if I can't play 5.  Hell, I'd actually be best off with just a snare, a bass drum, and the Hi-Hats at this point.

Drums:
5 Toms (8", 10", 12", 13", and 16")
1 Snare (14") which is a Ludwig (not sure which model)
2 Bass Drums (22")

What I have setup:
3 Toms (10", 13", 16"), the Snare and one Bass drum.

Cymbals:
All Saludas.  They probably aren't the greatest sounding cymbals, but I personally like them.
20" Ride
18" Rock Crash
16" Rock Crash
13" Mist Hi-Hats
12" Voodoo China

I have the Ride, 18" Crash and the Hi-Hats setup right now.

The hardware is all Pearl.

Tama Starclassic Performer EFX in white satin.  I love birch and they didn't have any good laquers in regular Performer.
(depthxdiameter)
18x22
9x12
8x10 (took off, sits in the corner of my basement)
11x14
5.5x14

Zildjian Cymbals:
14" A Custom Mastersound Hi Hats
18" Z Custom Medium crash
19" Z Custom Rock Crash
21" A Sweet Ride
*note these ARE the exact cymbals Cyrus Bolooki from NFG has but I loved the sound of the hats and the crashes and the ride.  I was going to get a 19" A Custom Crash instead but the Z Custom was less expensive and made for being brutally beating...just being cautious.  Its kind of a coincidence we have the same cymbals though...I didn't really do it on purpose

Hardware:
DW 5000 Delta Accellerator
DW 9300 Snare Stand
DW 9900 tom/boom combo stand
Pacific Boom stand (soon to be replaced)
Pacific straight stand (soon to be replaced)
Tama (not sure which kind) Hi Hat Stand (soon to be replaced)

Sticks: Vater Universals

Heads:  Evans

Acessories: 6" HolZ, Danmar Stick holder, Aquarian kick pad

*I will be getting a 6.5x14 20 Ply vented snare from Conaway very soon.

Pictures do not include all new cymbals just one of the crashes and hi hats.  The other two are my uncle's vintage Zildjians (16" Medium Thin Crash, 20" Rock Ride)

Excellent discussions at this forum! I've been to other's but this one takes the cake! Obvious "sound" advice throughout and  good discussion in-between. Can't "beat" that...

My main kit is a Turmoil Green Tama Rockstar Custom w/ Chrome Hardware posted just below:

To give a better idea of the set in overhead view, I've taken the liberty to recreate in it Photoshop 6.0.

Post by: Bleeder on February 21, 2003, 09:52 PM
After saving what I could, I ended up using my hard-earned money to purchase a pre-owned Tama Rockstar in Gloss Black as my practice set. It was in exceptional shape! Truth be told, without cymbals (They came later), I lucked into this set for a total of $775 WITH hardware! A guy in the Coast Guard was being sent to Greenland of all places! He had to let it go...

Despite the multiple drum-head changes to both sets however, these sets do not do justice to other higher-end sets, like Tama's Starclassic or better yet, the DW's, Orange County, or Ayotte's of the world. It's a good set mind-you, and the resonance that I like is reasonable, but the actual sounds emitted from the Mahagony-Basswood combo, even with proper tuning using my Drum-Dial, are much too high-pitched for my taste compared to the birch or maple sets...but I put up with what I could afford. One day I'll be able to afford something a bit higher in quality, but I'm very lucky for what I have, I shouldn't complain, all things considered.

Here is my current practice setup:

My practice kit is a 2000 Tama Rockstar in Gloss Black

A: 6.5" x 14" Rockstar Custom Steel Snare (Not too bad!)
B:  8" x 8" Mounted Tom
C: 10" x 12" Mounted Tom
D: 16" x 22" Bassdrum
E: 11" x 13" Mounted Tom
F: 14" x 14" Mounted Tom

Cymbals from left to right are all Zildjian...

1: 22" Ping Ride
2: 18" A Custom Crash
3: 6" and 8" Saluda Splash (They SUCK!)
4: 17" A Custom Crash
5: 16" A Custom Crash
6: 15" A Custom Projection Crash
7: 14" A MasterSound Hi-Hats (HIGHLY RECOMMEND!)

Pedals: Pearl P-2002C PowerShifter Eliminator Double Pedal.

Hardware includes Tama RoadPro Cymbal Stands and a Gibraltar 9707ML Hi-Hat Stand. I have no reservations regarding playing out with these...Very sturdy and also recommend them as well. And yes, those are drum shoes...as always, your comments are welcome.

A blue sparkle Premier. (Don't know exactly which model!) I've used this kit since I started playing 16 years ago and it was second hand when I got it.
The set up is -

20x16 bass
10x7 tom
12x8 tom
16x14 floor tom

This kit came with a 14x5 1/2 Ludwig steel shell snare.

The main kit I use for gigging is a Pearl ELX in Amber Mist

22x18 bass
10x8 tom
12x9 tom
14x11 tom
14x 51/2 snare

I also have various snares by Gretsch, Edgeware, Premier and Dixon

I use the same cymbal setup with each kit -
20in Sabin Pro sonix ride
14in Pro sonix hats
16 and 17in AAX crashes
18in Paiste crash
20in Paiste china
10in paiste splash

Various other bits and pieces, cow bell, Pro Mark sticks.
Oh, and my beloved Speed King pedal, don't leave home without it.

My current setup is a Sunlite 8 piece with an extra tama bass drum and the Lars Ulrich Signature Snare.  I have Remo ambassaders on the toms, a coated one on the snare, and Evans EMAD on the bass drums.  I have a mix of Meinl, Sabian, and Zildjian cymbals.  Tama Iron Cobra pedals and 8", 10", and 12" roto toms.  It's a very fun set!
