As for my faves:

Igor Cavalera - Sepultura
Joey Jordison - Slipknot
Jesse Smith - Zao
Jason Roeder - Neurosis
Tomas Haake - Meshuggah
Paul Bostaph - Slayer (sorry Dave, you rock, but I just dig Paul better)

Sure Im 31, and cut my teeth on Maiden and the like, but early on Napalm Death and Bolt Thower turned me to more extreme stuff.   And its suited me much better.

Danny Cary of Tool
Vinnie Paul of Pantera- I heard that he was trained at Berklee, but I think it's BS. If anybody knows, pleas tell me.

Least Favorite: Whiney little Lars Ulrich. Even before the band became a group of grumpy old men, I just thought his playing was like banging on pots and pans. One volume all the time.

Adrian Erlandsson - The most melodic extreme drummer

Dave Lombardo - Can anybody dispute 'The Daddy'?

Thomas Lejon - Prog metal master.

Dirk Bruinenberg - Chops galore.

Mike Portnoy - His drum sound is the best I've ever heard and his playing is just jaw dropping, my personal favourite.

I'm not a huge metal fan but the guy from Disturbed plays very smart. The first tune on the second album he does a very interesting rhythmic illusion by playing all his down beat on the 'e' of each beat while playin a slightly syncopated bass drum line....really cool groove.

Kenny "Rhino" Earl...did an album with the group "Manowar" in the early 90s. Some of the most solid, powerful, and fastest playing I've heard (his double bass will knock your socks off, and he played two HUGE bass drums, 26 or 28"). Here's a link to a clip of a drum solo off that album:

http://www.angelfire.com/wi3/drums/Achilles_Drums.wav

disclaimer: It's not really in time like a lot of drum solos (Scott Travis for example) because it's part of a 28 minute song based on the trojan war in ancient greek history. The drum solo is supposed to be the god of fire hammering out some magical armor for achilles or something, so a syncopated funk groove wouldn't really jive here. I have heard some of his other stuff though, and he's definitely got groove.

Vinnie Paul: to me this guy is absolutely awesome. Perhaps the ultimate metal guy.

Scott Travis: like Vinnie, rock solid, has a touch few can match and tons of power. I guess he's not as creative in his parts as he could be though.

Nicko McBrain: I really really like his style. Way too much of an influence in me actually. The guy to me revolutionized Maiden's style and does some pretty neat things than distance him from the rest of the NWOBHM drummers.

Igor Cavalera: very creative, added power and touch to thrash drumming.

Honorable mentions to Cozy Powell, Bobby Rondinelli and more.

And I've got to defend Lars a bit. His records show a solid drummer. He's been way overrated, and way underrated too. He did some good stuff with Metallica, and good god I'de wish to sound like he does on the Black Album.

I'm not mentioning Paice, Van Halen or Bonham as I think they don't play metal. They're tremendous of course.

At some point in his Manowar stint he was given Scott Colombus' stainless steel kit (by Scott himself). After this (I kid you not) he burned his old set. This is all actually on tape, I've heard it was very ceremonious.
Anyways, I believe that set had 26" kicks. Perhaps 24" but I thought they were larger

And that was the useless fact of the day  :P

Hey all,

Dave Lombardo-Slayer
Scott Rockenfield-QueensRyche
Tommy Lee-Motley Crue
Lars Ulrich

I have been a Lars fan for going on twenty years and no matter how many people "bash" him (bad pun) he is STILL the one drummer who got me into metal/hard rock in the first place and my opinion of him has not changed and never will. Sorry to go on like that. :)

In no particular order, and without getting into the definitions of the various versions of "metal" that may or may not include certain drummers from this list.  Personally, my heart belongs to metal.  And actually, this really is a compilation of my personal favorite mashers of skins.

Danny Carey - Tool
Eric Carr - Kiss
Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater
Tommy Aldridge - Ozzy, Whitesnake, Nugent
Lars Ulrich - Metallica
John Bonham - Zep
Vinnie Paul - Pantera
Carmine Appice - Blue Murder, Pearl, Nugent, etc
Vinny Appice - Dio
Randy Castillo - Ozzy, Crue
Alex Van Halen  =vh=
Blas Elias - Slaughter
Jon Dette - Slayer, Testament
Tym Helton - Hallows Eve

Hands down, all time fave and inspiration:
Bobby Jarzombek - Riot , Halford

Many of my favorites have already been mentioned, but I'd like to contribute anyway :)  These are metal drummers who have influenced me over the years and/or are also drummers whose playing I dig (I started playing in the mid-80s, if you can't tell :)):

- Vinnie Paul
- Tommy Lee (the original "groove" metal drummer.  Influenced by Curtis "Cowbell" Jones)
- Mike Portnoy
- Steven Adler (also heavily influenced by Curtis "Cowbell" Jones)
- Randy Castillo
- Deen Castronovo (I really enjoyed what he did on the first Hardline album.  lol)
- Mike Bordin (from the old Faith No More stuff)

I don't listen to a lot of modern metal because I don't really like the sound of it much.  That said, I'm not much of a Limp Bizkit or Tool fan, but I like John Otto and Danny Carey's playing.  I even like David Silveria's playing--reminds me of what Mike Bordin did in the late 80s with Faith No More.

I also agree with the vote for Charlie Benante.   :)

Finally, a topic on this board in which I can actually participate fully! haha!

My personal favorite drummers in metal are Jan "Hellhammer" Axel Von Blomberg who drums for Mayhem, Arcturus, Winds, Thorns, and the Kovenant. He manages to fit whatever the genre requires and push it to its limits. Check out Mayhem or Thorns for blazing speed or Arcturus for something unlike you've ever heard.

Asgeir Mickelson of Spiral Architect, Borknagar, Vintersorg, and Lunaris is probably the best drummer in metal and contributed to one of my favorite albums, "A Sceptic's Universe"  by Spiral Architect. It's complex to a point that is beyond comprehension and highly recommended to any fans of metal, experimental music, and extremely technical drumming. http://www.spiralarchitect.com/clips/spiralarc_movingspirit.ra
http://www.spiralarchitect.com/clips/spiralarc_insect.ra

Gene Hoglan of Death is a mandatory mention on this list. Death's "Individual Thought Patterns" and "Symbolic" are two of my favorites. Sean Reinert drummed on "Human" and is probably better than Hoglan, even if that isn't the best Death album. Richard Christy's work on "The Sound of Perseverance" is another absolute favorite of mine.

Kevin Talley of Misery Index shouldn't be overlooked, either. He recorded a few albums for Dying Fetus as well (his final, "Destroy the Opposition" was his high point in that band and arguably their best album on the whole) but what he did for Misery Index was far better. "Overthrow EP" is a shining light in the modern grind/metal scene. (He's extremely young, too, which gives me hope that you don't have to be old to be good.)

John Longstreth recorded two CDs with Origin that have to be heard to believe. Deathgrind at a blinding speed.

Finally, Brann Dailor of Mastodon (formerly Today is the Day) has a technique that is out of this world. He basically solos over the music with a style that strikes me as being very very jazzy. Listen to anything by Mastodon or anything off of Today is the Day's CD "In the Eyes of God." The song "Who is the Black Angel" is my favorite off of that one.

And how could you guys forget Bobby Rock????  Is he a metal drummer or more of a fusion player.

Agreed on Priest drummers.

Mikkey Dee absolutely kills. I can't believe the volume his ride cymbal gets on Motorhead's Live in Hamburg.

Barlow played with Tull right? Around Aqualung I believe?

I really enjoyed Manowar's first drummer. Scott Columbus is decent but not in the league of the first guy. That guy actually reminds me of Priest's drumming a LOT. Manowar kills but the whole True Metal shtick os growing old on me a bit.

Yes Deen Castronovo has been with Journey for several years now, since about 1997. He is an awesome player and a very nice guy also. I met him at a clinic right before he and Neil Schon formed the band Hardline.

He has recorded these with Journey so far:

Clive Bunker's last album with Tull was Aqualung.  Barlow began playing with Tull on "Thick as a Brick".  The first time I saw Tull on the Aqualung tour (with an unknown band named "Yes" opening for them), Barlow was on drums so the drummer switch must have happened after Aqualung was recorded but before the tour started.  Barlow, IMHO, was the best Tull drummer and the material that Tull put out in that period (IMHO) was the best Tull material.

i like that tull period a lot, too. pretty much the classic stuff.

"a" wasn't a bad album, even if was a little smoother and less conceptual [in terms of using most of the album to be 'conceptual]. i really like that tune 'black sunday.'

man, i can't even think of metal drummers, really. i was never a follower of metal in the sense of buying the albums. i just went to metal clubs to check out the guys and bang my head.  :D

i like the standard 'commercial' metal stuff like priest and accept and metallica, but then it went really dark and thrash and scary, and it didn't do it for me. i'm not into speed metal per se.

i did kind of like the drummer from that japanese metal band 'loudness,' but i don't even know his name.

circa 1979-1989, while a fun and wild period in my existence, has essentially been relegated to a part of my memory i'm no longer in touch with.

probably because it was a fun and wild existence. ;D

"a" wasn't a bad album, even if was a little smoother and less conceptual [in terms of using most of the album to be 'conceptual]. i really like that tune 'black sunday.'

I really like that song. I thought Mark Craney drummed on that one? He did on the tour. Another superb drummer.

Richard Christy - on "The Sound of Perseverance" album by Death.

To me, it's just amazing drumming. A very nice mix of metal/double bass speed and jazz feel.

Other drummers are Thomas Haake from Meshuggah and Nicholas ex Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth.

btw, eddie jobsen, tull's keyboardist on 'A,' went on to record a solo album called, i think, zinc. he recorded it across the street from my mom's apartment. imagine my shock when i crossed the boulevard to buy cough medicine at the drugstore, and saw eddie jobsen standing there like a 'working joe.' blew my mind.

seen it, but he's still an awsome drummer. the cradle of filth drummer uses one too.

Can you link me to a picture? I'd love to see this, because I really don't believe it. Neither of them play fast enough to require something like that. Nicholas plays heel-toe (you can tell on Cruelty and the Beast) and some At the Gates stuff would suggest that Adrian does as well.

Adrian uses Axis pedals -- Axis does not make a four-beater pedal. I'm almost positive that Nicholas uses them, too.

, the dimmu borgir drummer cheats with his quad pedal. speed is a key part to metal drummers i think.

I may be wrong , but I thought Barker was a heel/toe player.  I do know that alot of the black metal speed guys have been triggering their kicks so they get a more even sound and volume with shorter beater strokes, thus increasing their percieved speed.

Since I haven`t seen his name yet, I have to mention "Frost". He has been in the black metal scene in Norway since it started in the early nineties, and has been inspiring most black metal drummers here. He plays in several bands, but Satyricon is the most famous, and I believe they are getting very popular in the US. They`ve toured with Pantera in their earlier days and Slipknot if I`m not wrong. Other bands he plays with that you should check out is 1349 and Keep of Kalessin. And if you like black metal, I strongly recommend all of you to check out the Norwegian black metal scene. The best black metal comes from Norway. Period!  8)

I saw Lars live once, his time sucks- all over the place.  You'd think after a couple of thousanbd gigs, he'd be pretty good....
my very good friend works for AC/DC and sells amps to many top bands (Wizard Amps). Hatfield has one or two of Ricks Wizard amps and rick said that Lars meter is so bad. Rick taught me meter far better then any drum teacher i ever had, this guy has such an ear, for so much. i have to believe rick if he said that. i never seen them live but i had binge and purge on video and thought he came off pretty good. hate to be known as a drummer with bad timming

I only want to add that lars ulrich ain't bad. Just listen to And Justice for All.

The thing he's very good at is letting a guitar riff pound. He drums what he drums  because of the guitarriff.

Not because he learned all kind of drumskills and techniques from some fancy teacher.

So I agree he's not someone like Thomas Lang , but that's not the point when you play in a metalband like metallica.

Title: Re:Who are your favorite metal drummers
Post by: Hammertowndrummer on February 13, 2005, 06:12 PM
your're right rox....you do have to play for the music. But the bigger point is that Lars' time does suck (I saw them live on tour for the black album), and justice for all is full of overdubs.
Title: Re:Who are your favorite metal drummers
Post by: felix on February 13, 2005, 09:02 PM
I wish my time sucked liked Lar's.  How many platinum albums, how many world tours, how many arena gigs, how much money?

So what an album has some overdubs and you saw one show?  I'm sorry, I don't buy that.  I've heard Lars play several times and I would have to hear him alot more live (like live with the dude in his practice and recording sessions) to start making comments like that.

Lars "Large Oil Rigs" is the grand daddy of most of these obscure cats listed.  Have you ever even bothered to play a metallica tune live?  Especially his tougher stuff.  I'd really like to see you play Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets cuts on an hour and a half arena gig day in and day out and still be around 20 years on the scene selling out venues.

I don't know how long you have been playing, but how good were you in 1980's when those albums were released?  Were you even playing back then?  Maybe now you could roll Lars up and smoke him on the drums - but jeez, a little respect Pah-leese.  Lars didn't have the material we have at our disposal now to practice.  He did it the old fashioned way.

Lars and Metallica created a genre man.  A genre!  That is the mark of greatness- genius.  His cymbal playing, fills, double bass work, phrasing- revolutionary.  It might not have been all his, but he played it.  You know he helped arrange some of those songs.   Even today when I listen to a more obscure metallica song, I'm blown away.  Someone heard them in the old days and saw something great.  I remember back in the day when Metallica would play the small clubs here in town; one person even told me it was the best show they had ever seen.

Lars is a legend and doesn't have to pick up a drumstick ever again.

Lars Ulrich
Mike Portnoy (He's not really Metal but since others said him)
Vinnie Paul
Eric Singers cool
Lombardos ok

I don't know what you mean bad timing? Every Time I've seen him play he was on time. Lars IMO is a good drummer, sure some of his stuff is simple, but like mentioned before he has to play with the music.

Tommy Aldridge with Pat Travers.
Alex VH
Neil Peart
Steve Smith (Yes, he played on Tony Macalpine's Edge of Insanity in the late 80s.)

And yes, Barlow played on Malmsteen's first album Rising Force in 84 or 85.

That's about all I can recall except Vinnie Paul.  Whoa.

i want all to know that i did not agree with my friend who stated that Lars had poor time...
and i said all the things that Feix said to my friend.
i find on the Binge and Purge video that he is quite tight, and i love the energy. i like the video for the new St.Anger album, again nice and tight...besides lots of different cuts and tempo shifts, lots to remember, lots to focus on.
got to say i am never gonna touch a putdown on anyone. that was just what my friend said who had some studio time with the band, with his equipment, and my friend was comparing lars to Phil Rudd as far as that comment he told me. for that matter i felt that Phil while being incredible, was not as good as the last AC/DC drummer Chris Slade, but my friend having done one tour with Chris (his last) said that phil was tighter...but listen while i love and respect my friend, his ear is maybe too picky for me.

Hey I just caught this thread, I'l copy/paste what I said in the
''drummers who define their band -thread''

(1.)"Paul Mazukiewics" from "Cannibal Corpse"
many death-metal drummers have copied his sound, which later emerged into the "nu-metal" thing,(not my thing!)

(2.)"Nick Menza" from "Megadeth"
he may have had to follow guitar-oriented music, but he could still shape the uneven-Mustaine-riffs into balanced-measures allot better than "Gar Samuelson" I think, although he was better for tuff JAZZ!, But "Nick" really added on to "Dave Mustaine's" unpredictable-unrepeats & un-even staff-counts.

Also, "Nick Menza" & "Paul Mazurkiewics" both came from "Buffalo NY", wow I can't imagine my home town creating more than Hot-Chicken-Wings("Ankor Bar") & Kazoos!

I was thinking Marky Ramone, sorry! Yeah I know that's Punk & not Metal!

I saw Slipknot in the Summer with Slayer, man Slayer has a huge set, it looks like the 3rd-rack-tom is a 16x16 or something.  And Slipknot, I couldn't hear anything but the Bass drum in their mix, the tom-toms had a thin attack, & the Snare was too faint almost not there, but the Bass drums sounded clear & better than their studio album/recordings by far.  They put some short/fast delay/echo on all the drum-channels to give it a crisp tone for attack.  It was a good show.  Slayer's Bass drum was going in & out of audibility, probably because of a compression mis-setting, but everything else was very clear!

well, he plays guitar arhythmic like percussion, I'm not a Wilde fan.  Well, his music like Black Label Society.  It's like RYTHUM is MELODY, or Rythum in place of a Melody.  When the Guitar usually hits one note, usually palm-muted, drop-detuned strings.

What strikes me the most about these guys  like Disturbed and Sevendust, Dark New Day's drummers, in particular, is that they are "musical" drummers...they color....with splashes and accents and play the guitar riff with the BDs, not so top heavy..that's interesting to me in a new world of non-existant guitar solo driven rock...I play along with  these CDs.....who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks..it's another realm, another approach.....another trick in my bag

I'm just wondering about all the John Bonham, and i saw 1 Ian Paice. How exactly are they considered metal drummers? Given they helped pave the way for MANY metal drummers, i wouldnt exactly say they played in metal bands, nor gave it a "metal" sound, although metal covers a wide variety of sound. I don't know, maybe i'm ignorant, i'd really appreciate if someone can open my eyes. I've been thinking about this since i first saw the thread, i just can't come up with an explanation. Please enlighten me, it would be much appreciated.

I'd say Inmigrant Song is heavy metal. I'd say the same for Fireball or Burn. So you could make the case for them being metal drummers.

The thing with Zep and Purple is they played such a varied range of things in their career. They were really trail blazers and I believe they did some songs of the style before anyone this side of Sabbath. They weren't "full time" metal guys but they dabbled with it, Purple much more than Zep actually.

The problem with Heavy Metal is all the sub genre's it packs.  Honestly, i would think at best, the Immigrant Song is a hard rock tune.

Even if you want to classify vintage rock as metal, with bands like, twisted sister, iron butterfly, wasp etc etc...i would still classify them as a hard rock.

but whose to say my view is better than another's.

As far as drumming, i also believe that 90% of any beats could be used in any genre of music.  And what if Bonham wasnt there to help "pave" the way.  It would have been some one else.  MHO.

I thing Inmigrant Song qualifies as Heavy Metal. Very early, yes. Not exactly like Maiden or Priest, yes. Quite frankly Heavy Metal as a term is wide enough to fit them in, or at least I think so.

Besides, most of the vintage rock bands you cite are truely Heavy Metal. WASP fits perfectly.

We can speculate forever with what ifs. Certainly, Bonham was in the right band at the right time, could anyone else pulled it off like that? We'll have to settle with him for an answer.

IMHO.

No, Eric Carr (RIP) was their drummer before Eric Singer came to the band.

Somebody remembers Leonard Haze ! ! !

Mix his fast-azz single bass strokes with Bonham's bounce & you've got some sweet single bass drummin' ! ! !

Sean Reinert - Cynic, Death, Aghora
Tomas Haake - Meshuggah
Martin Lopez - Opeth

Danny Carey - Tool
Gene Hoglan - Death
Anders Nodin - Early Opeth
Lars Ulrich - Metallica - ok ok ... In my opinion he's fully redeemed from his great effort on 'Call of Ktulu', and if he could acutally do it : 'Dyer's Eve'.
Dave Lombardo - Fantomas, Slayer

My top 3 would have to be the top three I've written, Carey is probably my favourite drummer of all time, but Tool is heavy, but not as straight ahead metal as the others (mind you I consider most of them Progressive Metal anyway...).

i like the pantera drummer, and mike portnoy a lot, he has amazing chops, and just to mention, i do like lars ulrich most of the time.

he seems to mess things up, then redeem himself. i mean, his tempo live is a roller coaster (listen to the count-ins on the S&M CD) yet his studio drumming is great. i mean, if you listen to St-Anger (and dont write it off right away, as its actually a good CD) there is good drumming, and the double-bass in the song St-Anger is simply fast.

just my view on his drumming.
