ive just recently bought a 24" bass drum kit and want to use the bass drum without dampening but found when there was none in, the heads seemed to vibrate excessivley. is there a way to stop this or is this normal for a drum without dampening? i also have a hole in the front head which im hoping to change some time in the near future to one thats solid, so would this help at all or make it worse?
Thanks for your help

hard to troubleshhot over the internet, but here are a few tips:

1) add dampening (mufflers) to reduce excessive vibrations (ringing)

2) heads too loose will cause a dead sound.  you may need to adjust tension rods, up or down, to obtain desired tone

3) hole in front head will reduce overtones (make it sound more dead) and increase bass drum volume.  Removing the hole will cause a bit more vibrations.

You may want to consider a head that has built-in dampening.  A couple of choices are the Aquarian Super Kick and Evans EMAD.

A large bass drum like you have is going to sound more "boomy" than a smaller one.  I understand your desire not to use dampening, but you may need to in order to obtain the sound you want.  But that is a very subjective matter, so you'll need to decide what you like & don't like.

Hope this helps.
