as a vegetarian i have so much less to worry about. even if i ever started to eat meat again (very unlikely) i'd never eat it outside of my own home.

Well, I'm not so sure that this has to do entirely with the dangers of meatâ€"the finger could well have ended up in something not even seen by livestock, if the most likely situation is true.  Jesse Jackson himself admitted to spitting in soups and salads, for example.  Salad bars unattended by the professional buttinski were found to have been purposefully contaminated with Salmonella Typhimurium.  Tofu can go bad, etc.

A few years ago my mom found an earwig in her salad @ Wendy's. She took it to the counter and got another salad.

It took me awhile ... but I guess you are talking about the hair nets?
What they use to keep your hair from falling from your head and into the food.

You know, if the Wendy's staff had been wearing gloves, this thread may have never been started!  ;)  ;D

I thought an earwig was a bug about 1cm long with little pincers on its bum. Maybe that is just the UK name for them and they have another name across the pond. ???

An earwig is a nasty looking bug. Sorry, I may have spelled it wrong.

Nasty things, those.

Meanwhile, DNA tests are being conducted on the finger in the absense of a matching print.  "It was a long shot going in," said Rich Reneau, the guy who trains all of the crime scene investigators.

Lt. Chris Forrester said the coroner may hire a private lab to run further tests on the finger, which would determine whether it was cooked with the batch of chili or dropped in later.

Now, the plaintiff has been found to have a history of filing lawsuitsâ€"including a claim against another fast food restaurant.  Meanwhile, Wendy's maintains that the finger didn't result from their entity, and offers a $50,000 reward to anyone providing verifiable information leading to the positive identification of the origin of the finger.

If it is found untrue, she should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law!!!

Would you believe the plot thickens even more?

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/04/14/wendys.finger.ap/]Now this lady thinks it's her finger that ended up, somehow, in that chili.

Next they'll say that the spotted leopard actually ate the finger ... then the animal was killed, ground up and sold to Wendy's to be used in their chili ... only to realize that the animal wasn't fully processed, hence the discovery of the finger tip that was bitten off.

In the end, will this story qualify for a  http://www.darwinawards.com/]Darwin Award  even though, at least for now, only the finger tip was lost?

Ayala's sister Mary, who lives in San Jose but missed the fateful meal at Wendy's, has been outspoken in defense of her sister.

The police "wanted to know if I ever asked her, even jokingly, `Hey, did you do it?'" Mary Ayala said. "I said, `No, my sister wouldn't do that.'" She added: "It's just a mess right now. Things are out of hand."
(emphasis mine)

Has this sister been reading some of the bad puns on this thread?

Sigh. :)  You're a handful.

But, really, now things are getting out of hand, if I may continue blogging ( ;) ) :  http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/nation/11407882.htm]Wendy's doubled its reward to $100,000 Friday for information revealing how this whole mess happened, and has had to lay off some workers and reduce the hours of others ever since this happened.   Moreover, the link between this and the lady attacked by a leopard hasdiminished.

What a shame.  I think I'll get some chili there tomorrow.
