Pouplar songs with odd-time signature?!
« on: May 10, 2005, 08:59 AM »
Hi everybody,
I'm doing a special on my radio show which will be called "odd-time hour". The playlist will include partly popular songs that have odd-time signature (mostly 5 or 7).
I'm looking for songs that are not releated to prog-rock, jazz or world music - odd-time wouldnt be a problem there....
Here's some:
Sting - Seven Days/I was brought to my senses and more
sound garden -spoonman
Incubus - Nice to know you.
Pink Floyd - Money
Foo Fighters - Times Like These (havent heard it yet)

Do you guys have some more ideas?! need to fill an hour...

thanks!!

Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill
Mission Impossible theme - Lalo Schifrin (note, the original TV theme, not the execrable "disco" remake in four from the movie)
Turn it on Again - Genesis

Mission Impossible theme -awesome!!!

I'll listen to the other, the take 5 is quite obivious. Rush has lots of songs in odd-time (mostly 7/8). Im trying to avoid prog-rock stuff.

thanks!

Anyone has more suggestions?

Jethro Tull's biggest radio hit was in 5/4. I can hum the melody but don't remember the name of the song... ??? Anyone else?

Two Beatles tunes spring to mind:

All You Need Is Love
Here Comes the Sun (I had to look this one up) with 11/8, 4/4, and 7/8 passages in the chorus.

Tattooed Love Boys  ~Pretenders

The end of "I Love Rock n Roll" by Joan Jett (it has some 4/4,3/4 measure pairs in it.

Blue Rondo ala Turk ~Dave Brubeck (another song many have heard but don't know the title).

Is that in 9/8? can't remember.

Just remeberd : Alice In Chains - Them Bones. A bit too loud for my show, though.

You could check out Metallica's "...And Justice for All" album.  Just about every song has sections of odd time.  Also, check out Tool's Lateralus.  There's a lot of 5/4  as well as some 7/4 on that disc.

This is a very good idea for a radio show by the way.  It's something that musicians can appreciate more so than the masses.  :)

Doesn't that OutKast tune (the "shake it like a polaroid picture" tune) have some odd time in it?  Some 4/4 6/4 mixing?

Come On Eileen by Dixie Midnight Runners has some odd speed changes, but I'm not sure about the time signature.

Do show tunes count?

America from West Side Story and
Everything's Alright from Jesus Christ Superstar

4 More from Sting
Love Is Stronger Than Justice  from 10 Summoners tales is in 7 and I think Saint Augustine In Hell is too

I Hung my Head from Mercury Falling is in 9

and Straight to My Heart

Outkast's "Hey Ya" three measures of 4/4 one measure of 2/4 and then two measures of 4/4 again. So what's that? 22/4

Metallica had a bunch. Look on And Justice for All

Blondie's Heart of Glass has section in 7
so does the Bee Gee's Jive Talkin

Whipping Post, Allman Bros.

PJ Harvey's Dry

Nine Inch Nails Downward Spiral and March of the Pigs (is that prog?)

Beatles Within You, Without You

Led Zeppelin's The Crunge

The Police, Mother

The Cars, Touch and Go and Panorama

Roxy Music, Amazona

There was this rap tune with Coolio and Janet Jackson that I never could figure out

OOPS, didn't see the above posts

Now let's go out there and melt some faces!

A lot of the tunes mentioned hava few bars here and there of odd time, but very few are written entirely in an odd time signature.

Guess ya gotta to Greece (I always like to mention Yanni at this point) and other places for REAL odd time stuff (but then again, it wouldn't be ODD to them now would it??!!)

They may be too brash for your show, but just about any Tool song. Or any thin Carey plays on. Adrian Belew just put out a new cd ,Side One with Danny Carey and Les Claypool on it.The standout here is Ampersand which is mostly 7/4,4/4 and a bit of 6/4. Alot of  Perfect Circle. Maybe this would qualify as progressive rock.

I don't think Times Like These is in any odd time, seems pretty straight forward. Great song though.

Everybody has metioned Sting's Ten Summoners Tales record, it's full of groovie odd time (killer drumming on it).

EDIT: not Get the Funk Out, but Cupid's Dead by Extreme is in some odd time signature, but it grooves like mad too.

Jethro Tull was mentioned and I really think there's a lot of well known stuff by them that's odd.
It's still Rock'n'Roll to me.
