I thought it would be amusing to compile a list of our favorite songs featuring slapback echo prominently.  I don't mean mere reverberation; I specifically refer to an artificial sustain in which distinct separation is present.

Rock Island Line, Johnny Cashâ€"One of the more notable examples.  Dripping with the stuff.

Time Of The Season, The Zombiesâ€"I only noticed this tonight.  It's all over the vocals when you listen closely.

Your favorites?

jokerjkny

any Otis Rush record ala his "Cobra" years.  8)

Dead Trooper

A personal fave of mine is Judas Priest's Unleashed in the East, which features it both on vocals and guitar prominently.

i don't know the artist or song name [it's probably something really obvious], but as a kid, i loved this tune, where the lyrics went something like:

'hey, get your rock 'n roll
rock on, ooh my soul...

hey, shout summertime blues
jumpin' down in her blue suede shoes
hey, get yer rock 'n roll
rock on...

and where do we go from here?
which is a way that's clear
still lookin' for that blue jean, baby queen
prettiest girl i evah seen
see her shake 'awn the movie screen
jimmy dean?

[i never knew if they said 'jimmy dean' or 'billie jean'!]

then they keep repeatin' 'jimmy dean' and 'rock 'awn' till it fades out.

i'm sure i'm grossly misguided on the lyrics, but that's the jist of it. [hey, man, i was 8.] i remember thinking that if people took drugs, that song was what they must feel like.

the heck's the name of the tune? i can't get it out of my head now!

You're hip to that whole Google thing, aren't you?  ;)

Pick a line like "still lookin' for that blue jean, baby queen" and put it in quotes and Google it and you'll soon see it's David Essex's "Rock On."

Jon E

Or it could be...... the 80's version by soap opera heart-throb Michael Damian.

Jon E

Some RUSH tune has it too ("Trees" maybe??)

Dun Dunt (dunt dunt dunt dunt)
DAH Dunt (dunt dunt dunt dunt)
Dah dunt (dunt)
Dah dunt (dunt)
Dah duh Daaaaaaaah!

i am unhip to ALL things cyber-based! ;D

actually, i thought there was a specific 'lyrics' site that listed that stuff. now i know!

as an aside, isn't it weird how a tune will take you right back to a specific place? the david essex tune i vividly recall being in my mom's car, outside a doctor's office, behind this big department store called alexander's. i first became aware of 'stairway to heaven' while outside a candy store called phil's hot corner.

but whaddo you care, right?

shut UP, smoggy!

smoogy, just because you type it, doesn't mean you have to click on the "Post" button!   ;D ;) :o

(Oh, and it was Henry Ford who said :

well, then -- mr. stanley has some attributing to do!

[ he said it in some business publication...]

Joe

Okay, so, Rock On by that one guy.  All good choices thus far.

Who else?

smoggrocks

ok, 'nother 70s flashback: "Sky High" by Jigsaw. [of course, i now know the artist thanks to my newfound google search skills]. the echo's in the intro:

Blown... Rou-ou-nd By The Wind
Thrown Dow-ow-n In a Spin...

cheesy chorus, no echo:
I Gave You Love
I Thought That We Had Made It To The Top
I Gave You All I Had To Give
Why Did It Have To Stop
You've Blown It All Sky High!

there's a gazillion others, which naturally begs the question:

WHY ARE YOU ASKING?

are you compiling some more 'dater'?

"fly like an eagle" has it.
"tom sawyer" has it.
"the stroke" by sir squier has it.

the list goes on!

What's that Zeppelin tune where Jimmy page uses the bow on his guitar and points it in the air?  It's got some echo on it.

Would it be "Whole Lotta Love"?

Another one I just remembered:  "Come Softly" by The Fleetwoods.  This is another "listen closely" one.

Heartbreak Hotel -  as "covered" by Stan Freberg ... takes it to the Xtreme!

I think you are talking about "Overture - The Temples of Syrinx" from "2112".

How about "When the Levee Breaks" by Zep. You can hear it in Bonzo's gi-huge-ic drum sound at the beginning.

too many others to list...
