Are there any songs that are recognizable to everyone just from the drum part? Im not talking about a song that is recognizable to drummers like Roseanna for instance but for EVERYONE? Thanks guys

Chris Whitten

I don't think many lay people listen to drums though......
I don't think my partner Belinda could even recognise very famous drum intros.

A few drum intros that might stand a chance.......

Honky Tonk Woman - The Rolling Stones
50 Ways To Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon
Come Together - The Beatles
Hawai 5-0 TV Theme

diddle

ok, I'll *date* myself with this one...

"Sweet Pea" by Tommy Roe.  I think that was from the early sixties.

Steve Phelps (Shoeless)

Take the Money and Run -  Steve Miller
Walk This Way - Aerosmith
Lead Boots - Jeff Beck
Driven to Tears, Regatta De Blanc, Spirits in the Material World, Deathwish - Police
American Band - Grand Funk

to name a few

Mister Acrolite

Paul DAngelo

Gee, "Rock and Roll" would qualify, even for non-drummers.

The intro to the Spin Doctors' "Two Princes" was pretty identifiable.

"Little Latin Lupe Lu" - Mitch Ryder

"Paint it Black" - Stones

"Get off of my cloud" - Stones

"Rain" - Beatles

"Birthday" - Beatles

I'm sure I could come up with more, but I better get back to work...........

johndurg

Love Shack and Billie Jean

Both start with the same beat, but the SOUNDS are very destinct

Bart Elliott

I've got one that I've been saving for a contest. I almost posted it here, but I'm going to wait. I don't anyone will think of it to add as a drum intro, but there will be a few, that when they hear it, will know.  :-*

Doggo

Scott

I play these two in a cover band that I work with and can attest that people of all ages know these from the opening drum grooves:

- The Offspring - "Keep 'Em Separated"  (very cool 8ths on the hi-hat post)
- Green Day - "Longview"

For metal fans:

- Iron Maiden - "Run To the Hills"

For drummers:

- Tower of Power - "Squib Cakes" and "Ebony Jam" (if played CORRECTLY)

I'm thinking Wipeout is very recognizable just from the drums.

chillman4130

"She Came in Through the Bathroom Window"

This might be a stretch because it's just a couple of notes and not a proper intro, but "Hello, I Love You" might work too.

I like threads like this.  ;D

Ummm. Rossanna? Hello? What kind of drummer's board is this that Porcaro's signature groove is not immediately invoked? I know you all know it, because that's one of the mandatory grooves one must play when one sits down at a kit at Guitar Center.

I've never sat down at a GC set and played.  Do I have to turn in my drummer card?

No, but it's suspended until you can pass a quiz with questions like this:

You approach the counter to buy a cymbal when the 14-year-old clerk makes some snide remark about your brand choice. Do you:

A) Ignore it
B) Ask to see the manager to complain about his attitude
C) Lodge the edge of the cymbal into his voice box
D) Slam his face against the counter by pulling on his nose ring
E) B, C, & D, in no particular order

Another song that comes to mind is "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves. You can't help but do the "white man dance" when that drum part starts up, all flailing arms and all.

A) Ignore it
Yes, while casually wondering which McDonald's he worked at last week.

B) Ask to see the manager to complain about his attitude
I've found this to be ineffective since the Counter Dood's manager is himself only 15.

C) Lodge the edge of the cymbal into his voice box
What?  And render a perfectly good cymbal all icky?  No thanks.  I'd then have to buy a bottle of cymbal cleaner which will olny prolong my time there.

D) Slam his face against the counter by pulling on his nose ring
Only if there was a container of Clorox Wipes handy.  But, yes.

E) B, C, & D, in no particular order

+1 on "Walking on Sunshine"  Quite the peppy tune.
