Love that finish Ryan!  8)  And thanks for the welcome Nutty!  :)

I'm looking for that "thud" you were talking about so I guess I'll be getting some sort of pillow as well as giving your head suggestions a try.  Although I have to admit cutting a hole in that brand new Logo head has me slightly intimidated....... sure don't want to slip with an Exacto knife....  :o

Larry,
You are right, Buy a hole protector and be careful. Those Signature heads come from Japan. I have one on order now for over 6 weeks. They are hard to come by. The cool thing about porting the head is first off, it gives you a way to adjust the pillow easier and second, it helps when miking the kick drum.

Thanks Nutty!  FYI.  While looking for a hole cutter I saw that Musician's Friend has 22" Tama logo heads in stock.

You are right but the Star Classic emblem on the bottom isn't there.

Larry,

Get one of these:   http://www.guitarcenter.com/Aquarian-Port-Hole-449351-i1141452.gc]Aquarian Port Hole  (comes in black or white)

Put that wherever you want your hole and you've got yourself a nice template when you bust out the exacto!!  Also, it will protect the hole from splits and tears that can be caused by shoving a mic up in there.

Laters,
Ryan

Sorry for leaving you out, Louis!   ;D  I don't hear you talk too much about your Tama's, though.  Me and Nutty seem to be the two that yap yap yap about them all the time.

I'm sure there are others here as well.

Gretsch guy - and I really think it could be - for life.

Anything's possible, but I'm going to predict that for my remaining days of playing, I will be playing either:
- A Gretsch kit
- A custom built kit, if I ever hit Lotto.

What do you think of these?

There are 2 reasons why I don't like those.

#1 - They have a raised surface.  I like the Aquarian template because it adheres flush to the head.

#2 - It's a 2-piece design that can be prone to rattling.  I've heard others talk about this and I've experienced it myself.  However, it's a very popular piece of equipment and my results could be isolated (although I think that many others have experienced the same thing)

Just my $0.02

I spent the weekend cleaning and organizing my music storage room in preparation for the doctor letting me return to playing.  Actually he wants to do surgery again but 5 times is enough for me.  I will rehead my Starclassics which are set up and will post pics when I get the new heads installed.  Here are some pics of the room after cleaning.  I doubt if it will stay this organized for long.

Two kits having to sit in the corner for being bad!

Looking in the door.  It is neat for a change.

Shut up and play.

Very nice Larry!

Man, I gotta get one of those shirts -dunno why I'm spacing THAT out!

I now have a short list of shirts to get...where's Hannah Ford?

The books, on the other hand, I've already got!  ;)

Larry - don't look now but you've got Octobans!

That's awesome - I thought only Bruford & Copeland had Octobans...

LOL!  Where did those Octobans come from?????    Simon Phillips has got some too!  CERTAINLY the ONLY thing I have in common with Bruford, Copeland or Phillips!  LOL!  ;D

Warren, you're right about the "new kit smell."  And it's WAY better than the "new car smell."   ;)

I'm with Ya David on the Hannah Ford T-shirts.......How about it Hannah!???   :D  If you make them we will buy them!   8)

Sorry for leaving you out, Louis!   ;D  I don't hear you talk too much about your Tama's, though.

No problem, I have been lax posting lately but things are changing for the better so I will be on more often.  I have a 1990 set of Starclassic Maples.  It is a 6 ppiece set with a lacquer finish.  They are black, dark black!  The Bass is 22X16 and the toms are 10, 13, 14, and 16.  The toms depths are 10, 11, 13, and 15.  I love the sustain of the toms.  I am reheading the drums now and will post some pics in the near future.
