Studio Work!

Hey all;

I spent a number of hours (15 or so) this past weekend, tracking in Studio Victor in Montréal. What a great room. I managed to get a shot of the set-up for everyone to check out... and here it is:



What a great room; it's an old-time studio (the room is two stories high!) with unbelievable microphones and other amazing gear. I've tracked there before, but in Studio B; this time I was in Studio A.

Wow.  There is no place better to be on the planet than in a studio.  And one like that?  Sheesh.  They would have to drag me out, kicking and screaming.  What kind of piano did they have there?

I listened to some of your stuff with the girl singer- is that you playing piano also?  You are really good on that as well.  I play piano a fair amount myself and really appreciate good players and instruments.

But those 15" heavy 2002 hats?  ::)  ;D LOL just kidding the new guy!

Ha ha! The Heavy Hats have the work "ROCK" inked on to them; I was waiting for the Jazz Police to get me at the Jazz Festival shows, but luckily, nobody noticed.

I'm not the pianist on her stuff (I am on my own). Amanda blew me away the first time that I saw her 5 years ago and last year, when she asked if I'd be interested in joining her project, I jumped at the chance. Honestly, it felt like I had won the lottery!

The piano in the studio was a gorgeous Yamaha; it had short action (much like a Steinway) but the action was easier (as in, not as stiff or heavy). It's a great, great instrument. Yamaha makes some unbelievable stuff.

For sure.  I personally have a yammy p222, or something like that, studio upright.  It's from the 70's and has a great vibe for RH chords and stuff.

My mom has a steinway M that really sounds kick ass and I get to play that when I'm over there if I want.   And yes it's action is heavier than my yammy, which doesn't matter much to me; subsequently My playing technique on the piano is even worse than it is on my drumset.  ;D

  One of the guys that tunes for us tunes for Severance Hall here in Cleveland *ie. he's got serious piano technique* and he just burns on the steinway as well as my little yammy.  It's really amazing to see someone up close like that.

So yeah, steinways and yammy 'naners.  What's  better?  I don't know.

I have to start my piano lessons again soon... I miss them.  Maybe try and take a crack at some Billy Joel or Elton tunes.

I just love "playing" piano.  I get really jazzed talking about it!  Played some last night and this morning.  My bass player was over last night and we were working on an original... had the pa plugged in and the headset going with a bunch of delay.  Flippin playing piano is just so much fun!  It can (can being the operative word here  ;D) sound so awesome!

It sounded great; the kit sounded fantastic with just that one mic.
