Tell Freddie everyone at the Drummer Cafe says "Happy Birthday Old Man" ... he'll like that.  ;D

I just Twittered close to 300 people plus sent out an update to all of the Drummer Cafe fans on Facebook who live in the surrounding area ... letting them know about tonight's birthday bash.

The Potato was packed..which isn't actually that hard to accomplish given the interior dimensions of the venue. I really believe that any drummer visiting L.A. needs to stop at two places.  Pro Drum in Hollywood and the Spud in Studio City.

The evening started off with a smoking set by Joey Heredia with Marco Mendoza and Steve Weingart. Even after living in L.A. for all these years I've never seen this trio..and when Marco whipped out a 6 string fretless, my interest was peaked.  they are incredible players with a very naughty sense of humor. Joey was on great form with BLAZING double pedal technique.

Freddie showed up just before 11:30pm and came into the club around midnight for a little flamenco show (Joey Heredia on cajon) and some cake.

So...I have video of the whole thing..including some great footage of Marco Mendoza, Joey Heredia and Steve Weingart. I have footage of Freddie holding court in the Potato parking lot with Joey and Ralph Humphrey.  And finally, I have footage of Freddie blowing out the candles.  I also had a nice private moment with Freddie, but that, alas is not on tape.

So...I'm rendering the video now and will upload to the lovely Bart this afternoon

It was a wonderful drumming evening and a nice homage to the original drum ninja, Mr. Freddie Gruber.

Thanks to Doug Tann for attending this event and providing the video footage for the Drummer Cafe community.

I expected the 'Happy Birthday' to be in tune a little better than it was ... for being a "musio" crowd.  8)

To defend the muso brethren..The singers were mostly a flamenco dance troupe that Joey brought in.  We may not have been singing, but were trying to figure out how to fit "17" over the chorus...;')

Check out the Simon Phillips post.
