Who are the next gen drum heroes?
« on: November 04, 2010, 07:11 PM »
Well I thought it was time for a "easy to digest" topic. Lately I was thinking quite a lot about the new drummers that inspires me the most. And why do they inspire me?

It made me think about the heroes from the past. To make predictions for the future one most know the past. Isn't it?

During the period my father was in his twenties  drum heroes were Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Tony Belson. (I even got a Krupa CD box for my birthday from him.). And as time headed towards the fusion on the drum hero's were the names like Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd. Just to name a few. And a little later Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio, Jeff Porcaro, Dennis Chambers emerged.
And the past decade or so Jojo Mayer, Virgil Donati, other non-American drummers, Mike Portnoy, became big names. AND AND not forget the upcome of female drummers! Terry Lyne Carrington, Cindy Blackman, Sheila E.

This leads me to my top-3 of new drummers that really inspires me:

1. Gergo Borlai. Why? (watch:  http://garywillis.com/1179]http://garywillis.com/1179 ).  Musicality, creativity, technical ability to a new level
2. Keith Carlock. it's hard to describe why, but his groove and approach to playing, in some way authentic but also modern and fresh at the same time.
3. Benny Greb ........

What's your idea? How are drumming and drummers to develop as one of the youngest of modern instruments? Do these new guys add something new?

Dave Turncrantz - currently in Russian Circles.  Beautifully manages provide deeply textured and rich drumming while never falling off the fence into the overly baroque or overly simplified.  And does so with a fairly unique voice.

Glenn Kotche - most often associated with Wilco.   Kotche brings a avant garde flair to the fairly accessable music of Wilco without it being out of place or ostentacious.  And outside of that group manages to work in other more exploratory arenas and composes beyond his own instrument of choice.

Earl Harvin - has his own trio and works with a ton of folks.  Like Kotche, his more left field background brings a unique flavor to his more conventional appearances, without being a sore thumb.  And he's proven a well rounded musician/writer beyond his primary focus as a drummer.

Does Dave DiCenso qualify, or he is too old and well-known already?

Guys that I absolutely love that are still gaining name recognition:

Eric Harland. Just loving what he did on Aaron Parks CD. Tasty aggression.

Andy Fisenden. He's blowing up the London scene now that he's left Australia. Awesome pocket with great hand/feet skills.

Mark Guiliana. Doing crazy new things with metric modulation.

Well I'm not sure what the age cut off is for this, or even where the next gen starts, but I'd have to agree with Gaddabout on Dave Dicenso...he's an incredible player.

Also, I gotta place a vote here for Stanton Moore.  I've had the good fortune of getting to spend some quality drum time with Stanton on more than one occasion on both the stage and in the practice room.  His touch and the way he plays stylistically is just hard to explain or duplicate.  In addition to being a monster player his knowledge of the history of drumming and his ability to teach it just propels him to a whole other league.

I truly believe Stanton is a "Next Gen" drum hero.

Just a kid's two cents...

Hannah

I think when Gadd knows who you are and he called you his new favorite drummer almost a decade ago, you're beyond up-and-coming.  ;D

Stanton's drum royalty now. I say you're out if you've ever been on the cover of Modern Drummer.

Hey, I almost forgot: Hannah Ford!

Thanks Gaddy...that's very nice.

It's definately one of my long term goals to gain the kind of respect that the musicians you speak of have obtained.  In addition if I can inspire just one other person to work hard to acheive their own dreams and goals my job here will be done.

I guess only time will tell.

Bwah-stun. Also known as Boston. Oh, you weren't asking for an actual location. So many good drummers in Boston that some of them never leave. Steve Michaud, for my money, is every bit as hip as the big name technical guys, but he never left town (he got into the ministry) so he's not well known. You can see a Terry B transcription of one of his tunes in Modern Drummer this month. It's impossible to play. Crazy, crazy nested tuplets over metric modulation. Michaud's biggest fan is Todd Sucherman, if that gives you any idea of his abilities. They went to school together at Bezerklee, where Dave DiCenso is also an adjunct professor.

Dave's played with everyone. Last I heard he was on tour with Duran Duran I think, but I know he has some serious local Boston/NY projects. One with John Petrucci. Another with Fuse from Screaming Headless Torsos. He's the guy I think a lot of people wish would fill the Dream Theatre chair. He has the chops, but he would also raise the game for that band in the groove department. He's a monster. I don't think he'd take it, though, out of respect to his friend Mike Portnoy. But Dave's a real risk taker for a guy that can also hit hard. That's a rare combination. Makes his playing FIERY.

Ditto all that above.

I second the Mark Giuliana vote.  Amazing player.  Be sure to get the Heernt CD.

Was thinking about this thread when I saw this video last week. Jimmy's videos have become pretty popular, but this solo sort of raised my impression of him. Guy's got the goods. Guessing he's going to be an MD cover boy in the future.

Dave Dicenso really should be a drum hero--he's better than everyone!!!  Buy his book "Universal Rhythms" and just listen to the little exercise examples on the CD, his counting along grooves hard enough to make you laugh out loud. I can't believe he didn't get a call to audition for Dream Theater...

Here's a Dave clip for ya:   ]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_81IomgGEY#

As for the list, I think Chris Coleman will be added.

I read one post on this video that kind of ticked me off for a moment... He said "She's real easy on the eyes but not worthy of playing the professors kit." Then I remembered what a sexiest pig I can be too and thought "well the guy that wrote that has no idea who she is or what her talent level is..." He's ignorant like I was! Hannah! I have to say you are already one of my heroes young lady! I've learned a ton of stuff from you just by watching and listening. I really admire your drive to be the best drummer you can and obviously I'm just one of many that do! I was bragging about you the other day on Facebook. Always a "Hannah Fan"

Awwww, thank you Gregg...that's so nice of you to say.

Believe me, I KNOW there are those on the ole youtube that aren't my biggest fans..LOLOLOLOLOL.

But that's ok, all I can control is me. :) No matter what anyone says, I'll keep my priorities in order and continue to work as hard as possible to achieve and hopefully inspire.

You really don't know how much your kind words mean.

Thank you,

Peace Love & Drums....

Hannah
