Tymp - please help me determine which pitch.....

Hi all. I am trying to understand tymp pitch, as it relates to sheet music. Here is a note:



I know that note is D below middle C. What I don't know, however, is which octave that would be played as. Here are two D notes:

Without worrying about duration, can you please tell me which note the sheet music says to play?

The notated D you are showing would be the higher D in the range of timpani. You could play this in the upper range of the 26" bowl, or in the lower range of the 23" bowl.

The low D would be notated below the bass clef staff and played in the low range of the 32" bowl.
