Paulo Mattioli (2003)

Paulo Mattioli, born on June 7, 1956 in Madison, Wisconsin, was a world-renowned multi-percussionist, performer, educator, and instrument designer. He dedicated his life to promoting community, unity, and wellness through the unifying rhythms of the drum.

Paulo graduated with honors from the University of San Diego and holds a degree in music, communications, and visual arts. He has done groundbreaking research in the use of drumming as a communication technique within West African Cultures and has immersed himself in the rhythm of West African music.

Paulo was a Remo World Percussion Signature artist, and the designer of the Remo (tuneable) Djembe, having designed drums in college when he was carving his own drums. Paulo’s drum designs incorporated new materials and cutting edge technologies to create a New Generation of great sounding, easy to tune, durable, and lightweight Djembes.

Paulo was one of the worlds leading drum circle facilitators, with a magical ability to inspire and empower others through drumming. He toured nationwide, facilitating corporate, college, and community drum circles, leading drumming events, master classes, and workshops across the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Mexico. His passion — to be about his work, radiating joy and patience while graciously sharing the spirit of rhythm and community teambuilding.

Paulo performed with many major artists, including Sting, Lenny Kravitz, Kenny Loggins, Mickey Hart and Babatunde Olatunji. He has studied and recorded with the world’s top African Drummers from "Les Ballets Africains," Mamady Keita, Kemoko Sano and Yamousa Camara. He has also performed and taught with African Master Drummers: Babatunde Olatunge, Mamady Keita, Kemoko Sano, Yaya Diallo, and Dibo Camara.

Paulo’s magical talent was wonderfully captured in his DVD's, books, and CD's, including his #1 rated instructional video series, Hands on Drumming - Universal Keys to Hand Drumming. Paulo Mattioli's work as musical director of West African drum and dance ensembles, "Mystique D'Afrique" and "Drums of Fire," was featured on Fox’s television series, “The Method Show” which also featured tracks from his World Music CD, “Around the World in Rhythm.”

Paulo Mattioli died on October. 22, 2011 after a long battle with brain cancer.
