Odie Payne

Odie Payne, born August 27, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, was an American blues drummer, best known for his numerous recordings and performances within the Chicago blues scene, as well as his use of the cowbell, bass drum pedal, extended cymbal and drum rolls, and the double shuffle where he used both hands, in unison, to play the shuffle rhythm pattern on the drums. His shuffle drumming technique was much copied and utilized by other drummers, such as Fred Below and Sam Lay.

Throughout his music career, Payne performed and/or recorded with the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson II, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Little Johnny Jones, Tampa Red, Otis Rush, Yank Rachell, Sleepy John Estes, Little Brother Montgomery, Memphis Minnie, Magic Sam, Chuck Berry, and Buddy Guy.

Payne was a student of Roy Knapp, studying drums and graduating with high honors from the Roy C. Knapp School of Percussion.

Odie Payne died in Chicago on March 1, 1989; he was 62.
