Albert Tootie Heath

Albert "Tootie" Heath, born May 31, 1935 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an American jazz hard bop drummer, first recorded with John Coltrane in 1957. He is also the brother of tenor saxophonist, Jimmy Heath, and the double-bassist, Percy Heath.

From 1958 to 1974, Heath worked with the likes of Gene Ammons, Walter Benton, Kenny Drew, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Dexter Gordon, Bennie Green, Johnny Griffin, Friedrich Gulda, Herbie Hancock, Milt Jackson, J. J. Johnson, Clifford Jordan, Wes Montgomery, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone, Bobby Timmons, Yusef Lateef, and Cedar Walton. In 1975, Tootie and his two brothers formed their own band known as Heath Brothers, where he until 1978. After leaving Heath Brothers, Tootie went on to do freelance work and recording sessions.

As an educator, Heath is a regular instructor at the Stanford Jazz Workshop and active clinician.

Currently, Tootie Heath is the producer and leader of The Whole Drum Truth, a jazz drum ensemble that brings together the greatest veteran jazz drummers in an all-percussion quartet. The group features Tootie Heath, Billy Hart, Louis Hayes, Willie Jones III, Idris Muhammed, Ben Riley, Kenny Washington, Jackie Williams and Leroy Williams. Past members include Ed Thigpen.
