Shelly Manne

Shelly Manne, born Sheldon Manne on June 11, 1920 in New York City, New York, was an American jazz drummer. Although Manne is associated with West Coast jazz, he was best known for his versatility and ability to play in a variety of styles, including Dixieland, swing, bebop, avant-garde jazz and fusion, as well as contributing to the musical background of hundreds of Hollywood films and television programs.

Shelly Manne died of a heart attack on September 26, 1984. Just two weeks prior to his death, on September 9, 1984, Manne was honored by the City of Los Angeles in conjunction with the Hollywood Arts Council when they declared it "Shelly Manne Day."
