Paul Motian

Stephen Paul Motian, born on March 25, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American jazz drummer, percussionist, bandleader and composer of Armenian extraction.

Motian first came into prominence in the late '50s, pioneering the Bill Evans trio. He is considered to be one of the most influential modern drummers, having played an important role in freeing the drummer from strict time-keeping duties.

Paul Motian died on November 22, 2011 at the age of 80.
