Havana Drum FestivalOrganizers of the Havana Drum Festival announced that the Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam International Drum Contest will take place this year from March 8th to the 13th.

Supported by the Cuban Music Institute and the Ignacio Piñero Music Center, the event is open to Cubans and foreigners living in the island of any age.

The event includes five categories: drum set, snare drums, African drums, bongos and African talking drums; each player is allowed to compete in up to two modalities.

Angel Gomez and Giraldo Piloto, general director and president of the contest the Festival will take place at the Palacio de la Rumba in the municipality of Centro Habana, where they are getting ready to welcome the contestants.

Winners will receive an instrument of their specialty and other prizes donated by collaborators and sponsors; they will be exempt from paying the enrollment fee to the Virtual Drummer School and there will be special prizes for the best women and children performances.




KoSA CubaIn addition to the festival, KoSA Canada will be taking their 9th annual pilgrimage to the KoSA Cuba Workshop and Fiesta del Tambor. Participants will be hosted at the beautiful modern Hotel Occidental Miramar in Havana.

KoSA CUBA Course of Study:
The KoSA Cuba Workshop is a one-week immersion of Cuban rhythms, music, and culture. Daily classes are given on conga, bongo, timbales, bata, and drumset and other instruments by some of Cuba’s top artists. All instruments are supplied on site. Included in the daily schedule are sessions by Cuban ethnomusicologists, visits to museums, religious ceremonies, local interaction with Cuban musicians, and nightly concerts which feature artists such as Chucho Valdez, Klimax, Los Papines, Los Munequitos de Matanzas and more.
