Jake Hanna memoir

Jake Hanna: The Rhythm and Wit of a Swinging Jazz Drummer, a colorful memoir of the great jazz drummer and witty storyteller, recounts the life story and career of Jake Hanna through tributes, recollections and anecdotes — many of them his own hilarious quips — from more than 170 friends, fans, and fellow performers including Toshiko Akiyoshi, Marian McPartland, Eiji Kitamura and Jeff Hamilton; musicians he mentored such as Howard Alden, Harry Allen, Dan Barrett and Scott Hamilton; and fans such as Harry Crosby, Charlie Watts, Vic Firth and Jim Keltner. His performances with Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Harry James, Supersax, Hanna-Fontana, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Oscar Peterson, Count Basie, The Merv Griffin Show band and over 250 albums are legendary!

"Jake... was a great jazz drummer who worked with many of the top performers from the 1950’s on," Maria Judge, author and Hanna's niece, explains. "The book recounts his career through stories and tributes I collected from 189 of his friends, fans and fellow musicians. Jake was also a very funny guy, renowned in the business for his impeccable comedic timing, so the book is full of hilarious stories about the things he said and did."

Born in Boston, jazz drummer Jake Hanna spent ten years with the Merv Griffin Show Orchestra, played with Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Oscar Peterson, Howard Alden, Tony Bennett and Roberta Gambarini, and recorded more than 250 albums. His 60-year career as a "top jazz drummer and witty raconteur" is told through the memories and anecdotes of the book's contributors.
