Hal Leonard - Maracatu

Drummers and percussionists can add a hip new groove to their repertoire, thanks to a hot-off-the-press book/CD pack from Hal Leonard. Maracatu for Drumset and Percussion: A Guide to the Traditional Brazilian Rhythms of Maracatu de Baque Virado.

Written by master percussionist Scott Kettner, Maracatu for Drumset and Percussion is the first book dedicated to the topic. Maracatu is a rhythm from Northeastern Brazil whose deep roots extend to the Candomblé religion, and to coronation rites for African kings and queens. Kettner is a maracatu expert who has studied this rhythm extensively in Brazil, and will workshop it at the PASIC convention this fall.

Maracatu for Drumset and Percussion dives into this traditional rhythm, which has expanded to provide the framework for a particularly exciting style of music. Kettner explores every aspect of this dynamic genre, including: instruments of Maracatu de Baque Virado, changing traditions of maracatu, traditional and contemporary maracatu manifestations, drumset applications, New Orleans mambo, and more.

Kettner shares an accessible and pragmatic approach to learning and understanding the instruments and basic rhythms of Maracatu de Baque Virado, and how to apply these rhythms to the drumset.

Maracatu for Drumset and Percussion (HL06620170 / $19.99) is a book/CD pack that all drummers can benefit from. Available at your local drum shop / music store, or online today through the Drummer Cafe.
