Modern Drummer - 35 YearsNineteen seventy-seven--the year that Jimmy Carter became president of the United States, Alex Haley's Roots dominated TV, Star Wars became a cultural phenomenon, Shakira and John Mayer were born, and Elvis Presley gave his final public performance--was also the year that an exciting new magazine devoted exclusively to drums, drummers, and drumming was launched.

Aptly called Modern Drummer and founded by Ron Spagnardi (1943-2003), a professional drummer and drum teacher from northern New Jersey, the magazine featured articles and interviews with major drummers from a wide range of musical disciplines, news and reviews of the latest drum equipment, and columns from highly respected educators. Modern Drummer's unique ability to both document and influence the state of the art during an unprecedented period of expansion quickly established its popularity and critical acclaim.

Now entering its 35th year of continuous publication, Modern Drummer remains the world's most successful publication of its kind. Today, MD has the largest circulation of any single drum magazine in the world; in fact, its circulation is nearly as large as the distribution of all other drum magazines in the world combined. In addition, Modern Drummer-branded publications have grown to include special editions along with an extensive collection of educational books and DVDs. The year 2011 will also mark the 21st edition of the world-famous Modern Drummer Festival™, an event that attracts major drum artists and enthusiasts from around the world.

As part of its 35th Anniversary celebration, Modern Drummer is creating a series of advertisements featuring quotes and images from a handful of the leading modern drummers who have grown up reading the magazine. Among these artists are Ray Luzier (b. 1970), Matt Greiner (b. 1985), Teddy Campbell (b. 1975), Jojo Mayer (b. 1963), and Benny Greb (b. 1980). Additional anniversary activities and special features in Modern Drummer's print, electronic, and online publications are also planned.

"Over the past three and a half decades, millions of drummers have been influenced and, we hope, inspired to become better musicians by Modern Drummer," comments MD vice president and longtime associate Kevin Kearns. "On behalf of the entire Modern Drummer family I'd like to thank our readers as well as the drum industry for their trust and support. We are committed to remaining a constant resource for the ever-changing world of drumming in the next 35 years...and beyond."
