Stephen Perkins - Spring

He survived one of the most influential – and infamous - bands in history: Jane’s Addiction, whose fusion of punk, metal and tribal rock changed the landscape of modern rock. He has collaborated with the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine and Nine Inch Nails. And today, legendary drummer Stephen Perkins renders his musical art visual with the release of “Time”, his first fine art collection and the second chapter in the “Art Of Drums” series, in which the team at notorious creativity house SceneFour collaborates with the world’s greatest drummers to create music for the eyes: one-of-a-kind fine art pieces that capture their every move behind the drumset and put them on canvas.

In the heretofore uncharted terrain of ‘drum art technology’, drumsticks are paintbrushes, the drumset a palette, and the drummer a musical Picasso, streaking colors in stereo sound before the watchful eye of a highly sophisticated camera, capturing his every move. From there, the SceneFour team condenses, enhances and translates each of these visual documents of musical activity onto canvas, and the result is bottled lightning: a series of artworks, each wholly unique, all existing somewhere between still picture and perpetual motion.

“Art Of Drums” is the latest project from Los Angeles-based SceneFour, whose co-founders Ravi Dosaj and Cory Danziger have spearheaded the ‘collaborative art’ movement through their groundbreaking work with luminaries like RZA of Wu-Tang Clan, Bootsy Collins, Chuck D of Public Enemy, Angelo Moore of Fishbone, Page Hamilton of Helmet and many more. Their litany of acclaimed works were showcased alongside Picasso and Dali originals at world-famous Andrew Weiss Gallery in Beverly Hills for the "Come Together" exhibition, where they also unveiled their eponymous coffee-table book outlining the genesis of each of SceneFour's artworks.

Only 100 drafts of Perkins’ series of canvases exist, 10 pieces of each. They range in size from 40"x30" to 18"x30", each signed and numbered by Perkins. G’N’R/Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum kicked off the “Art Of Drums” series, and collections are forthcoming from Rick Allen of Def Leppard, Frankie "Kash" Waddy of Parliament-Funkadelic and more.
