Money Goes to Help Prevent Juvenile Diabetes

For the fourth year in a row, over 40 runners participated in the Southern California Half Marathon and 5K race to raise money for the Children’s Hospital of Orange County’s (CHOC) Trial Net program for Type 1 juvenile diabetes research. With $5,000 raised this year, Yamaha has helped raised over $30,000 for the Trial Net program. CHOC is one of just a handful of research facilities in the U.S. that is trying to find a cure for Type 1 Juvenile diabetes.

An avid runner, David Jewell, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Drums, determined to raise funds and awareness for the hospital after his daughter, Katrina, was diagnosed with Type 1 juvenile diabetes in 2005. Katrina is now a sophomore at the University of California at Santa Cruz majoring in biology.

Yamaha check“It really says a lot about Yamaha employees and all of my friends and family, when so many people come out to help like this,” says Jewell. “This year, Katrina ran her fist half marathon and made great time: 1:48:45.” Over 30 runners on Team Yamaha competed in the five kilometer race and eight ran the half marathon. As a thank you to all who participated, Jewell held a party at his house attended by around 60 people.

The CHOC Diabetes Center is the first pediatric diabetes program in Southern California to be recognized for meeting and maintaining American Diabetes Association (ADA) standards of care guidelines. It is also one of the largest screening sites for the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Diabetes Prevention Trial-1, which seeks to find a cure, reveal causes of the disease and identify preventative measures.
