Sunny Murray

Sunny Murray, born James Marcellus Arthur Murray on September 21, 1936 in Idabel, Oklahoma, is best known as one of the pioneers of the free jazz drumming style.

Murray grew up in Philadelphia, PA, moved to New York City and began playing with Cecil Taylor. He was later featured on the influential 1962 Copenhagen, Denmark concerts and live recording released as Nefertiti the Beautiful One Has Come.

Murray was among the first to let go of the traditional drummer role as time-keeper — choosing instead to play textures.

Murray's sound and approach continued as a core influence in Albert Ayler's trio, recording Spiritual Unity.

From 1965 to 1996, Murray has recorded twelve albums under his own name.

Throughout his career, Sunny Murray has performed and recorded with the likes of Gil Evans, Jimmy Lyons, David Eyges, Billy Bang, Khan Jamal, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Cheikh Tidiane Fall and Malachi Favors, Burton Greene and Alan Silva, David Murray, Dave Burrell, Aik Takase, The Reform Art Unit, Charles Gayle and William Parker, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Archie Shepp, Gunter Hampel, Sabir Mateen, Christian Brazier, Walter Malli, Kenny Millions, Clifford Thornton, Arthur Doyle, Francios Tusques, Assif Tsahar and Peter Kowald, The Contemporary Jazz Quartet, and Telectu.
